I had a great Krups machine before this one. I was buying this because it was heavily discounted for a limited time. For the price, I expected a better quality of product. I love my coffee and have had about 5 espresso machines by now and know a good one when I use it. The best thing is to list the pros and cons, I think.

    Pros:
    (1) The crema on this machine is second to none – it really is the best of all the machines I’ve had (which means the pump is really good); this is particularly great for lovers of the classic espresso (I’m a latté/capuccino drinker)
    (2) The coffee comes out quickly – I’m not waiting ages – this is a *major* plus
    (3) The coffee holder ‘clicks’ into place, so there’s no pushing it too far, putting too much pressure on the handle (which has led to me cracking a handle for a previous machine)
    (4) It makes great coffee!
    (5) The frother – the plastic outer nozzle is easy to remove and clean.

    Cons:
    (1) The frother – the inner metal nozzle is difficult to clean after every use and is susceptible to blocking with dried milk you may have missed (it’s a real faff to clean)
    (2) The frother – it makes the least-dense froth of any frother I’ve used on a machine, ever; so much so, I decided to invest in a separate milk frother to compensate (and that’s not good)
    (3) The frother – no matter how long I use it to froth, the milk never seems to get hot enough
    (4) The frother – because of the positioning and manoeuvrability of the frother (or lack thereof), it’s very difficult to manage a jug underneath sufficiently; this was improved by bringing the whole machine forwards to the edge of the countertop so the jug was below countertop level – this isn’t ideal, and, again, a bit of a faff
    (5) The frother – I’ve burnt myself about 4–5 times on the metallic inner nozzle when trying to clean it – it just isn’t practical
    (6) The frother – because of all of the above, I just don’t use it anymore, which means I probably paid more for a machine that has one than I could have for one that doesn’t
    (7) This machine feels ‘light’. My last Krups was a heavy, metal-based design. It had plastic parts as well but felt more ‘solid’ and good quality. This feels light and cheap in comparison. I’m not returning it but it’s definitely not the best espresso machine I’ve owned, overall.

Overall: if it’s espresso making you want, this machine is great. If you do a lot of frothing, keep looking.

This was a replacement for the first one I bought. That was replaced because the steam option frequently didn’t work. This one is being returned for the same reason. Have chosen a refund this time, and will purchase a something from another manufacturer.

Unless you’re into getting scalded by random jets of water, I’d give this machine a miss. I had two machines with the exact same fault: The shower head fires water jets sideways, causing serious channelling in the grounds – resulting in a frothy, watery espresso. This issue becomes a health hazard during cleaning as the machine sprays boiling water over everything within a two foot radius – including the user. There’s a YT vid “The Best Espresso Machines Under £100” where the reviewer has exactly the same issue, so check that out if you’re in two minds. My previous experience of Krups was very good, but this flimsy – potentially dangerous – machine confirms that they’re taking short cuts. I can’t fault Amazon’s customer service who were courteous and helpful throughout. But I strongly suggest pulling this item from sale and doing some QC testing – someone could get hurt.

After my old espresso machine decided it had had had enough I started looking for a new espresso machine. Krups was not a brand I had thought of but I kept seeing their products get good reviews. I saw this machine at a very good price, read the reviews and decided to buy it. I have been very happy with the quality of the machine, more importantly I have been very happy with the quality and flavour of the coffee! If crema is what you are looking for this little machine is a wizard! If it’s a good milk steamer this machine will blow you away! It is easy to use and easy to clean, lightweight, looks good and makes great coffee. Recommended.

I previously had owned a Krups Novo Espresso machine which was way ahead and much simpler to use than the Opio. The Opio is really a step back in hygiene and ease of use. it has an extremely unhygienic filter system which almost impossible to clean and dry out, you cant just switch from cup to steam with one switch like the Novo, this machine needs 2 switches for these functions which is a real pain. I dont understand Krups making things more awkward to use, just doesnt make sense. Having said that steam function is very good and heats milk very quickly. Next time I would choose another make, Sorry Krups your machine is a complete failure in design. very bad indeed.

We have a little Krups machine – the predecessor to this, I guess — in our second home. It’s a little workhorse. But when we got this…. well, they’ve taken so much ‘cost’ out of the product. Everything is lighter, more plasticky, less substantial. Felt like landfill with a coffee aroma. Made in China, but I guess most things are. Coffee was ok – not as rich as the previous model – and we returned it and thought we’d try another option.

I bought this to replace a 12 year old Krups XP4050 which was on it’s last legs but had done sterling service. The build quality of Opio is nothing like as good, it weighs about half what the old one did, and it won’t last 12 years but it costs considerably less than the old machine did all those years ago. Having said that it does what it says on the tin it heats up quickly and makes a great espresso with a generous crema layer. No hot water function just coffee or steam and it wont do pods (which doesn’t bother me). One word of caution when I first got it I thought it was broken as no water came through, it took about 10 minutes of very gentle persuasion to remove an air lock and it’s been as good as gold ever since but the warning will be don’t run the tank dry !
