I grew up using espresso machines and have over 40 years experience with them. This machine makes indescribably bad coffee.

This joke of a machine has wasted 2kg of the finest fresh locally roasted coffee… coffee which I have years of experience using and pulling exceptional espresso doubles on using a proper machine.

I have not just used the inbuilt grinder (which is basically a toy) – The inbuilt grinder was tested using measured bean doses from 17g to 21.5g in .1g steps. Purging between each test-grind. I did NOT rely on the pathetic supplied tamper… For consistency, I used a properly set calibrated tamper.

I also made sure the machine was reset to factory defaults before using it at all.

Regardless of setting, this machine produces bitter, undrinkable muck.

At NO TIME has it ever produced a correct dose of espresso. I even use a tare-ed scale to ENSURE the correct ratio of bean weight to final espresso weight.

This machine NEVER gets the correct shot, usually producing more than 3 times the correct amount, with disgusting results EVERY TIME.

For comparison, I compared the output to my 20 year-old Gaggia, grinding the coffee for both machines using a super accurate Anfim commercial grinder.

The old Gaggia still makes a great espresso with the same beans… The Sage Barista Pro has still never produced anything drinkable… I have thrown away EVERY cup of espresso that ever came out of it. NO EXAGGERATION, NOT ONE CUP OF DRINKABLE ESPRESSO HAS EVER BEEN PRODUCED BY THIS £699.00 PILE OF RUBBISH.

There is NO WAY to tell if it is set to the correct brew temp, and no way to adjust it to any known value!!!

I can make far better shots with a £25 Aeropress, a 20 year old Gaggia Classic. This should give you an Idea of just how useless this machine is.

Needless to say, It is awaiting collection and a full refund from Amazon,

We bought this in March knowing we were about to spend an insane amount of time at home. Firstly, this is a lot more work then a Nespresso machine. You’ll have to clean up mess after every grind, tamp and shot. It takes about 3-5 minutes of effort to get a latte out of the machine. Also, every day, or other day, you’ll need to give the trays an empty, rinse and wash down to keep it all pristine.

However, the quality it produces is miles better than any instant machine. It’s also heaps better than other bean-to-cup machines we tried like the highly rated Beko. Everything can be dialled to taste, including grind volume, size, and shot extraction.

My wife is now a pro barista, and we’re doing our bit for the environment by not promoting wasteful capsule systems (despite being diligent about recycling very capsule).

It’s not cheap, but for us it’s been worth every pound.

We paid almost 500£ for the machine and less than 5 months after purchase the milk frother has stopped working. I have tried to contact Sage UK several times both via phone and also via their website and had no response after 4 weeks of trying. Absolutely appalling.

The Sage Barista pro arrived super fast. I have had it for over 8 months and use it every day. I decided to go on a barista training coarse and was trained on commercial machines and can truly say I am very impressed on how this machine performs. The espresso extractions are exactly the same as the commercial machines, the grinder dials in to a super fine grind perfect for that perfect rich espresso creating a thick crema. The milk frother creates silky smooth micro foam allowing you to create the perfect latte art. I am super impressed with Sage for developing this machine at this price point. Recently during the lockdown we were forced to work from home and the Sage Barista Pro really proved it’s worth, on average we enjoyed 14 cups a day in the house hold which would normally have been our daily purchase from barista close to our office. The Sage machine still performs faultlessly and produces comparable milk coffees that matches any good barista coffee.

After a few months with the machine an very pleased. The only downside is with the grinder there is a big learning curve. One tip is to set the inner dialer of the grinder to a lower setting, mine is on 4. The machine comes with a 6 and for most beans store-bought coffee beans (I know they recommend freshly roasted but it wasn’t easy to get all the time) that I tried it was too high and I couldn’t grind fine enough. With inner at 4, the outer dial setting should be around 15-18. One another tip is to warm up the machine for at least 10 min, but if you don’t have time then at least 2-3 flushes. Although the machine heats up quickly, the head is still not hot enough for good coffee. The steamer power is very nice and you can make microfoam for latte art, just insert the wand at 3 o’clock where the tip just touches the surface and let a lot of air in, it’s ok if you see many bubbles forming, once the jug is a little hot insert the want fully and let the bubbles mix in. You need about a little less than a third of jug full for good foaming. Overall I’m very pleased with the machine.
